I'm forwarding a post about the shows I'm about to open in (yeah, that's where I've been lately). Aside from the fact that I'm really proud of how this festival is turning out, it's always good for us to see a Shakespeare production, to get the sound of the language in our ears.

I'm not in the Tempest (but it's a lovely production). I have a singing role in As You Like It, one of Shakespeare's best-loved romantic comedies. Our non-Shakespeare show Beauty and the Beast is really fun as well.

By the way, if you get a group of 10 or more together, you get a group discount - just call or email and ask Mark for the group rate.

The Los Gatos Shakespeare Festival (July 18th through August 9th) is just a few weeks away, with our fantastical 7th Season of family entertainment at an affordable price, and in one of the most beautiful settings in the South Bay.

This season is filled with magic, comedy, and the theme of redemption as we offer William Shakespeare's "The Tempest" and "Beauty and the Beast", and "As You Like It."

Our version of "Beauty and the Beast" is an original adaptation of the classic fairytale, originally performed by FTE in 1997. Don't miss it!

You can order tickets by calling 800-838-3006, and asking for the Los Gatos Shakespeare Festival, or go online, and order tickets and season passes with a few clicks at:

Hey, all! I'm very excited to announce that the next Belles of Bedlam performance is going to be in just a few short days! We've done faires for the Big Bear Valley Renaissance society before, but this year they're excited to present their very first Victorian Faire! This coming Saturday and Sunday, July 5th & 6th, join the Belles, Sportive Tricks, and a wide variety of other exciting shows and entertainments!

Here is a little more info:

The Big Bear Valley Renaissance Society, Inc. is delighted to announce our first Victorian Festival on July 5th and 6th, 2008, at our permanent site on the north shore of Big Bear Lake!

Hosted in the lovely little town of Fawnskin, the Victorian Festival is a day in Charles Dickens London: a city filled with lively and colorful characters from both literature and history. Come join us for an adventure in this elegant era with hundreds of costumed players in music halls, pubs and dance parties. Explore our winding lanes, finding trinkets and treasures while surrounded by enticing aromas of hearty foods and the joyous sound of music in the air.

Some of the activities will include a Victorian Tea, Tea with the Queen, and readings by Charles Dickens, Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain, and other literary artists of the 19th century. We will have demonstrations of the Gatling gun, cannon, and a battle of the Queen's Royal Army! Entertainment, such as the always exciting (and often titillating) Belles of Bedlam, will also be provided on five stages throughout the day. And, for the younger set, we will have the children's craft & game area.

While not all visitors come in costume, a great many do. The highlight of the event, the Grand Masque Ball under the stars on Saturday night, is a costumed affair, although a non-costumed gallery is available, if you would like to witness the glamorous spectacle.

Hope to see you there!

So, if you would like a copy send me a PM and I’ll arrange to drop copies off. With the exception of, Emeryville (2 stops), San Diego, L. A. He has been in touch with the RESCUE folks and hopefully they will be able to help with the vet bills, not sure yet what's going on, as this is a developing situation. Updates will be posted, and (sorry) I will be cross-posting the info to other related tribes.
Please send good wishes and puppy prayers to the diety of choice ; )
Here's a link to Bob's profile here, if you would like to send him a note of encouragement to share with Curtis:
In 2 weeks (Saturday, May 17th, 11am – 4:30pm), myself and Jessica from Court will be working this event in Marin. Performers from Dickens will be there as well. If you live up in the North Bay, have a little one and have an interest it looks like a nice little event.

Erin Duggan Saunders (Dove Rosey/Newcastle) and Meegan Ochs (Newcastle) are the ones planning it. They are selling tickets for food and activities at the door. Prizes are given for the games, there are lots of themed activities, and organic food. It is a fund raiser for the pre-school there (where Erin and Meegan have their kids) but is also to encourage reading.

We will have out flyers for the Faire as well.

Cheers!

I did much, much, better then I figured I would. It was a nice day for a ride, it was cool and overcast. This helped me greatly, since I don’t do well in the heat. Out of all of us riding in the 50 miler, I finished very high. I am not one for patting myself on the back. But, after 16 years of not riding and to do this well was a shock to me. I was just hoping to finish. But, it all came back to me and it was like I never left. Thanks again.

I recently accepted the challenge of cycling in the American Diabetes Association's Tour de Cure fund-raising event. The Tour de Cure is a series of cycling events held in over 80 cities nationwide. The Tour is a ride, not a race; it features different route lengths from a leisurely 10-mile course to a demanding 100-mile journey. I have joined thousands of others to pedal in support of the Association's mission: to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

I am asking you to help by supporting my fund-raising efforts with a donation. Your tax-deductible gift will make a difference in the lives of more than 20 million Americans who suffer from diabetes and another 54 million people in the United States with pre-diabetes.

It's fast and easy to support this great cause - you can make your donation online by selecting the "Click to Support Me" link below.

Any amount, great or small, helps in the fight against this deadly disease. I greatly appreciate your support and will keep you posted on my progress. If you want to do even more to help, please consider joining me in this great event. Our efforts will help set the pace in the fight against diabetes.
Just a headzup . . .
Last week, sometime between the third and fourth (final) weekend of the first-year event "California Renaissance Faire" (on the Ortega Hwy between San Juan Capistrano and Lake Elsinore) someone made their way thru the grounds of the CRF and stole a number of items. A gaming table from the nobles, merchandise from vendors, etc. Worst hit was Pendragon Costume who had two storage tubs of
product taken. This included a full size selection of their Desiree bodices both in black suede and black top-grain, a full selection of their signature tooled bodices, Hand tooled belts, pouches, and tankard holders made especially for the event, and a couple of doublets. Several of the items were unique. If anyone comes across someone selling a selection of Pendragon product (via eBay, rummage sale, small event booth, privately to acquaintances, etc.), perhaps claiming to be an authorized reseller - they're not, it's stolen. (Pendragon normally sells direct only, their profit margin is too slim to sell via 3rd parties and
maintain their prices).
Please report any suspicious offerings of Pendragon product to authorities, or to their site PendragonCostumes.com.
This despicable theft was a tremendous loss to Nicole the owner, an extremely hard-working divorced mother of three with no other source of income. -Jerry

Faire is quickly approaching and we are looking forward to seeing our faire family again soon.

Like every year, we depend on you, our members, to make our garden work.

Last year saw the most wonderfully full garden. Your volunteering and interacting and engaging the patrons was a delight. We look forward to an even better 2008!

We again need your helping hands, gracious smiles and garbed
bodies in our guild site for the Valhalla Renaissance Faire.

Volunteering with VF is a great way to meet new people, have fun and
enjoy watching the wonderful people in the streets.

We do ask that all volunteers be current members of VF and work a two
hour shift per day for Saturday and Sunday of each weekend that you
would like to be gate listed. Please wear period appropriate garb when
volunteering. If you have any clothing questions, just email me,
our guild mistress Pamela Day, pamela@poozles.com.

Here are the areas we need your help:

Friday, May 30th (mid morning - mid afternoon) - set up. We unload the
trailer, put together membership, decorate - the fun job, do a bit of
paint touch-up and probably some yard work.

Saturday & Sunday, May 31 & June1 and Saturday & Sunday, June 7 & 8 - the
following areas:

Gate: 10-5 , 2 hour shifts. The gate person welcomes
our members into our guild site and helps answer questions from patrons.

Keepe: 10-5, 2 hour shifts. A keepe person
will check our members bundles into the keepe with care.

Membership: 2 hour shifts as needed. Membership handles
applications, membership pins, $$, and also helps answer questions of
patrons.

We also have other areas that might need to be filled, but the above ones
are our priorities. Other areas might include Meet and Greet or Patron participation!

In exchange for working a two hour shift each Saturday & Sunday you will
receive a gate pass for that weekend.

Apologies for cross-posting - I thought this event would be of interest to both costumers & faire folk, so I'm posting it in a few tribes.

Costume Con is an annual event that moves around the country (and sometimes goes international) -- this year we are really lucky that it is coming to San Jose (first time in 14 years it's been in California!). For those who like to make costumes, or like to wear them, this is going to be a great venue to learn about costuming, and even more importantly, to socialize with likeminded people! There will be classes, competitions, and tons of social events (and yes, the hotel has a party floor!).

It takes place April 25-28, 2008, so it's coming up in about a month! The cost goes up incrementally every so often - currently a weekend membership is $95 and will be $110 if you buy at the door - so purchase in advance!

Check out their website for lots of details on classes, competitions, social events, hotel info, etc.: http://www.CC26.info

Here's some more info:

Costume-Con Returns to the Bay Area
Costumers Gather to Ooo, Ahh, and Learn

For the first time in 14 years, Costume-Con returns to California! Costume-Con is a premiere venue for professional and hobbyist costumers to meet, compete, share, and socialize. Costume-Con 26 takes place April 25-28, 2008, the San Jose DoubleTree. Visit http://www.CC26.info for more information.

Costume-Con 26 welcomes space cadets, living history aficionados, reenactors, textile designers, theater designers, fursuiters, mascots, cosplayers, fantasy costumers, costume professionals and folks who just like to dress up! The convention offers fun and education for all types of costumers, and those who appreciate costumes, such as photographers and artists.

Kevin Roche, master class award winning amateur costumer, is the chair for the convention, and will include his work in the retrospective programming. The historical and science-fiction contests are a major draw, for designers and skilled sewers alike. Fashion designers will find the Parallel Dimensions in Design competitions right up their alley. Mad Science Fair competitors create wild props and gadgets. Topics of workshop interest range from stagecraft to historical tribe design. Not to miss out on the lighter side, convention events include a Victorian Underwear Party and a Mouse-Kerade (costumed stuffed animals parade), as well as a special Doll Exhibit, featuring Japanese jointed dolls.

Sorry for the length of this and for the cross posting on several tribes, but after many agonizing months, we've made the really hard decision that we're going to be leaving California in the next month or so, probably not to return. If we do return, it won't be for several years...

The short version of the back story is that I was laid off from my engineering tech job last May. We've been living mainly off our savings and stock sales since then, but you can only go so long that way. I've been doing the high tech shuffle here in the "Valley of the Molten Sand" since '82 and I'm simply burned out on it... After this most recent lay off with me at 47 years old, as my mental and physical abilities have changed with age, I've lost my confidence to be employed in the only field I've worked in since entering adulthood. Now, if I even seriously think about re-entering the high tech workforce, I tense up to the point of starting to physically shake and tears start welling up... The few interviews I have forced myself to go on haven't turned out very well since it's pretty hard to sell oneself to a potential employer when one doesn't believe in oneself...

Anyway, as our resources here are starting to dwindle, we've got to do something soon or we'll wind up losing the equity in our house. To that end, we've made the exceedingly tough decision to sell our house here in San Jose and buy a house free-and-clear on more land back east, probably in the Ozark foothills of northern Arkansas. The whole financial equation changes drastically with no mortgage payments...

Now, before any of you get started on ribbing me about Arkansas, let me just say that I don't take it too well... Or, to practice for once I get there, "Ah don't cotton too kindly to folks sayin' thangs 'bout where Ah'm a'going an Ah ain't gonna stand fer it!" (I'm sure it won't take too long for me to get my Southern Drawl back... too bad it comes with all the other southern drawbacks.) I'm also working on getting one of my aunts to legally adopt Sherri... I mean, we're already married, but we'd fit in a smidge better if'n she was my cousin, too...

So, Jingly Bits will no longer be "bringing music to the quieter corners of the shire" at NCRF or any of the smaller circuit faires in California... We'd like to thank Molly for giving us the opportunity to grace the Curtain Call stage at Casa for the last couple of years. It was cool having Martin and the Naughty Minstrels as our warmup band last year... They did a pretty good job, but had a tendancy to lull the audience to sleep and then we'd get to wake them up!

Casa was (and always will be) our home faire. We started participating there as Friends of Faire under REC in 2003 and Arline (recently retired Mistress of the FOF Buttery) told Donnie (GM of Danse Macabre) that there was a new mandolin player in town... Danse Macabre asked me to "audition" and I was told by someone that "it's such an honour to be invited to join Danse Macabre!" (You know who you are and I've been paying for your statement ever since, thank you very much.) My "audition," which was possibly the only one ever given to a musician joining Northern Danse Macabre, consisted of Donnie and Ted asking:

"Can you play an A-minor?"
me: *bling*
D&T: "Can you play an E-minor?"
me: *bling*
D&T: "Can you play a D-minor?"
me: *bling*
D&T: "You're in the band!"

We jazzed up the Bones tunes and hit the streets of Casa hard, with mandolin machine heads pointing to the sky... That was in 2003, and I pushed the Bones to do more shows in 2004. We wound up doing 26 weekends of faire in 2004, mostly as Macabre and with me acting as GM on several occasions. Sherri and I started up Jingly Bits at SLO in 2005 because organizing the Bones to work as many shows as we wanted to was prohibitive. We also wanted to be out on the streets interacting with our patrons more than is customary when one is Dead...

Jingly Bits has been playing the streets and stages of events from Pembrooke, Willits, Calaveras, and Ione, and down to SLO, Visalia, Fresno and Bakersfield ever since. During that time, if we've offended anyone's senses or historical sensibilities and thus made their snobbish teeth itch, I would like to apologize. I won't actually apologize, but really, I'd like to... Personally, I've never been snobbishly period, though I have been periodically snobbish... Even though many of our songs weren't exactly period, (can you say "Flogging Molly?") I think we brought a lot of high energy to all of our performances. I know we put everything we could into them and the folks that did watch us seemed to enjoy it a lot.

Speaking of folks watching us, I'd also like to take a moment to thank all our fans... Oh, the appreciative roar of the crowd and the loving crush of our adoring fans... To all our fans, we're going to miss both of you terribly...

Anyway, no more Jingly Bits at faires in northern California,

BUT!!!

You have ONE LAST chance to catch us before we go. The day after we made the excruciating decision to leave, we were offered a paying pub gig! On St. Patrick's Day, Monday, March 17th, Jingly Bits will be giving their final performance in California. From 6pm until at least 8pm, we will be on the patio of O'Flaherty's Irish Pub in downtown San Jose. It's a pub, after all, so Master Thomas unfortunately can't be there with us, but we would be honored if some of you were to make it to the show to see us off.

It's hard to believe our run as Jingly Bits is over in California, but it is. We WILL be continuing on, and are already gatelisted for a faire in April in Joplin, Missouri. Once we get settled in after the move, there are several other faires within a hundred mile radius... We'll also probably try to work TRF at some point. There are also numerous SCA events in the area... I'm going to be taking some of the techie stuff I can do and apply it to woodworking and making period furniture, games, toys, weapons, and household items that would fit in at ren faires, SCA events and even Civil War re-enactments. (One of my prototype folding chairs and 20 of my lucets were supposed to be with a vendor at the Sonora Celtic Faire this weekend, by the way, but we've not heard how they did or if the vendor even made it there...) When or if we come back to CA, it might very well be as vendors...

Again, sorry this is so long winded, but you'd expect nothing less from me, would you? So, I'll sign off now... It would be far too strange and too painfully strained to hear or read blogs about how great this faire was or how fantastic the after-hours stuff was at that faire or what's planned for the other faire... To that end, I'll be leaving all the NorCal faire related tribes I'm part of and will be deleting most of the faire folks on my friends list. No offense is meant, but it would be too painful to be reminded over and over again of what we had to leave behind... If you notice your friend count dropping by one in the next few days, it was probably me...

Thanks to all that have made this long strange trip as wild a ride as it has been... We'd love to see some of you at O'Flaherty's on St. Patrick's Day. If you can't make, that's fine and understandable and we'll just wish nothing but the best for you as you rot in Hell... If you can make it, that'd be great! (If you do go, park in the garage across San Pedro street from the pub and get the barkeep to validate your ticket...)

Take care and may all your journeys be safe ones, where ever they might take you.

Goodbye, my friends...
This information was sent by a friend. I thought it was something
that needed to be passed around.

St. Gyles trailer, with all of their props has been stolen. Please
share this information with anyone in our world you think of. Maybe
someone can catch a `fire sale' and let the rest of us know, so we
can recover at least some of what they've lost.

The sad thing is that they've recently replaced a pavilion or
two...Panther Pavilions run about $2,500. They also had some older
ones, about 4 total, so that's about $10k worth of props, in addition
to everything else...the rugs, ewers, platters, trunks, etc.

The trailer, license plate number 4EA3550, was in Hayward, parked on
the curb outside a guildmember's home. It was a 16' long, by 6' wide
by 7' tall, white, no-name cargo trailer. It was stolen some time
Sunday night.

There seems to be some interest in the idea of bringing these two giants back to life at NCRF. There are many considerations so I dared to start a thread to really see if it is a genuine likable idea or just an excersice in basking in the "good old" days.

Design has to be the beginning place I think. From a workable design materials can be selected to fit the project then we know what crafts people would needed and finally that would lead us to estimated costs. Pondering this idea I saw it becomming a community project, just as it may have been when these Giants appeared in the Lord Mayor's Show from the time of King Henry V.

Dre, our lovely APQ, asserted that St. Cuthberts has specific information concerning the construction of such props. So I anxiously await some input from them. Also if anyone was involved with Gog and Magog at Blackpoint your input would be exceptionally welcomed.

So lets see what becomes of this. :-)

A nice little site about the Lord Mayors Show is here :
A group of us are trying to get a group going and are looking for interested players. Our group is going to put on scenes from plays written by the great Playwrites of the time. We are hoping to get people who would like to be either part or full time, but have a keen interest in acting out what the famous Bards of the time wrote in the language of the authors. We are also looking for Chorus (the speech giving kind not singing kind) positions to introduce the plays and help thread the scenes together if need be. We are also looking for understudies of the parts (in case life gets in the way) and some people who are interested in multitasking and possibly some crew type positions.

So, over at the Snobs tribe, we've been discussing how to make a good faire from a business perspective and one of the answers was "Location! Location! Location!" and the emphasis on obtaining/owning a permanent piece of real estate. I mean the company really owning the site!

So, all you bright, observant Ren Faire Participatns and Patrons out there on this tribe for Northern California, I ask you, do you know of any spot that you've always thought, "Damn that would be a great spot for a faire!"

I would think the site you've seen would have to have the following:

1. Its in a potential position to be bought!

2. It is centrally located

3. It is near major freeway access

4. It has lots of parking space

I'm just talkiing about the BIG considerations here....
Any I forgot that should be mentioned? (electricity and plumbing can be got just about anywhere).

So, how about it! Do you know any sites out there that would make a great permanent faire site? Dream away.....

In one Dickens thread there are interesting thoughts about getting people to know your charactor's name. I think the same should be discussed for any Faire where historicals or even really well rehersed "citizens" are portrayed.

Renaissance actors deserve to have their name known by the audience. After all, we spend bundles of our time (and money) to look right, act correctly and go out each day to entertain people. But how do you accomplish this communication on such a grand scale when there are several thousand customers? I'm sure that customers come away from the stages with some familiarity but do they really?

The APQ has the most direct identification and perhaps the players who have faces associated with advertising the Faire. But from there it seems to dwindle. The more that a customer attends the faire the more they learn the who's who. But how do we or how can we capture moments throughout the day of the show to help customers learn more of the wonderful citizens of our village. How can we help them along.

I try to greet charactors I am familiar with by using their name.. loudly... where appropriate. Or I take a moment and do an aside with a group of customers when I see one of measured importance approaching. You would be suprised to know how well the customers respond which usually leads to a picture taking event and the opportunity to gig about that important person or with that person. And guess what, that customer will know that important person for the rest of the day and on each return to Faire

"Sweet Veronica Franco, No other more beautiful in all of Venetia!" "Oh Veronica Franco La Bellezza Cortigiana Onesta!"

I'm not picking on you Tess. But as you walk though the villiage with your foreign strangness and dark haired beauty. Well, customers do not pick up on who you are UNTIL someone takes the initiative and aproaches you with a resounding greeting.

It is difficult to know everyone. But this exercise can help the actors also. There is more I can say but I'd like to hear how you help customers to know the who's who.

During a recent conversation at Dickens this year, a few of us found ourselves discussing Casa. We bemoaned the lack of substantial Elizabethan/Shakespearean theatre there, how what is presented as theatre there has been "dumbed-down or translated into modern speech or been made a parody. If one's goal is entertainment, are such measures truly necessary? Elizabethan theatre was everything entertainment ought to be, from comedy to tragedy to philosophy and romance. Why not present it in its true form?

We started dreaming up theatrical ways to fill the gap and finally hit on the idea of trying to form a new acting group that would put on excerpts from the most famous works--I say works because we don't want to omit the sonnets, et al. We also are open to other authors and playwrights, although we would want to focus on well-known works at the start to be recognizable to the audience.

We've contacted the entertainment director at Casa, and have yet to hear back, and know that we face probably daunting circumstances: we're new, Casa may be full up for entertainment, it may be too late, there's politics to consider, etc.

We thought to start this endeavor by producing a video to show our wares so to speak, so we'll need a costume resource, other than what's in our closets, and interested actors and actresses.

What does anyone think? Does this sound doable (we're starting to plan the video, bet getting into Casa is our true concern)? We have a tribe set up: Globe Theater.

I'm just throwing this out there for anyone to weigh in on. Thanks in advance.

This paper is a small incomplete version of what is likely to become my master’s thesis on the Ethnography of Faire folk in the later years.

If you would like to see what was turned in please PM me and I would be happy to send a copy out into the cyber world to read. Or if you are going to be at the Dickens Faire for the final weekend a copy will be back stage with me in the caroler’s area for reading material.

Again a BIG thank you and remember if you read the paper… if you cant say something nice (or cant find a nice way to say something mean) please don’t say anything at all. Thank you

Production on part 1 begins next year and releases in 2009 while part 2 releases in 2010. They're being shot back-to-back just like LotR. Very cool news!!!!

You have to live in So Cal so that you can make weekly rehearsals but I thought since lots of So Cal folks do Northern I'd cross post it here.

**************************************

MWOW is Auditioning!
The Merry Wives of Windsor are seeking one awesome woman to come play with us. We play at Renaissance Faires around Southern California and sometimes even venture up North. We usually play 2 to 3 large shows a year outside of the Renaissance Faire circuit. This past year we played The Galaxy, The Orange International Street Faire, The Derby and The Grove. We have released three CDs and we will be recording a fourth sometime in our future.

We currently have nine members in the Wives and we are seeking the magical 10th. We have Bouzouki, Mandolin, Bodhran, Fiddle & Bass as our core instruments. If you can expand on that list, come show us! We rehearse Tuesday evenings from 7:30 to 10:pm in Pasadena. Rehearsals are required. We do take small breaks but we are a year around group.

Here is what we need:

Alto (F2 - D5)
Strong sight reading skills
Instrumentation a plus (please bring the instrument to the audition if you want it to count)
Previous Renaissance Faire experience desired but NOT required
Team player with a love for group action (no - NOT like that)
21 or older

The audition will include the following elements:

One song, acapella, any genre - but tell us a story with your singing
One Mwow song for which we will provide music in advance
You will sight read one or more Mwow songs
You will play any instruments that you wish to be considered as part of your audition
You will sing each Mwow song that we use in the audition with a soprano and mezzo; we will be looking at blend and balance
You will rehearse with us on the evening of the audition to see how we all work together. This also allows you to decide if you like how we work.

The first four steps of the audition will take place with the directors and a bouzouki player only. The rest of the audition will be during rehearsal with all members of the band plus auditionees.

The auditions will take place on:

Tuesday, January 15 starting at 6:30pm in Pasadena. You need to plan on being there until 10:pm though we may break earlier than that.

Thanks so much! We are really looking forward to meeting you.
The Merry Wives of Windsor
