I predict that 102 years ago tomorrow (04/18) at 04:12 an Earthquake will occur on the West Coast. The fire that results will destroy a major part of San Francisco. Major damage will also be reported in other cities such as San Jose.
I’ll see you all at Lotta’s Fountain at the corner of, Kearny, 3rd, and Market, early in the morning.

Re: OT: Earthquake
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 9:14 AMyou mean the fire that could have been extinguished if they had used the wine?
Yes small historical tid-bit, the surviving wine in barrels throughout the city was enough to have put out the fires if only someone had thought of using it at the time.
Also the Quake & Fire was the springboard used by A.P. Gianiani (sp) to launch the Bank of Italy. He set up shop on a plank over two barrels the day after and started giving out loans. This bank evolved into what is now known as Bank of America.
(But none of us are history geeks around here) -

Re: OT: Earthquake
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 11:05 AMYep, that's the one.
From what I understand the usual route is to gather at Lotta’s Fountain at approximately 5:00 followed by a trip up to the “Golden Fire Hydrant” at the upper corner of Dolores Park. From the hydrant you can see most of the devastated area. This was the closest working hydrant to the downtown area.
Yes I know I said 4:00. The earthquake was at 5:12 STANDARD TIME. To truly understand what it was like you really should be there at the correct time of day. Sunrise is at about 06:30.
If anybody else is going please send me a PM. Perhaps we can get together for breakfast. -

very close...your italian is a bit rusty. we like to put in letters where they're not needed. Giannini is the correct spelling. ~_O -

Re: OT: Earthquake
Thu, April 17, 2008 - 8:50 PMI cross posted this just because it always touched me so.
Obviously couldn’t make it but I’ll share a story that was told to me by a women I took care of when she was old.
She was a little girl with 6 or so sisters and brothers when the earthquake hit. The lived in a lower-class section of town. Their home was completely made of wood. She and her family were awake and preparing for the day. When the earthquake hit it was so strong that it knocked them around their kitchen. She fell to her knees beside the table. Her mother was yelling, “the lamp, the lamp!” Her eldest brother dashed the sideboard and caught the oil lamp as it fell or toppled. She always said that if he hadn’t been able to stop it from going over her home would have burned.
After it was all over her family climbed Russian Hill and watched the city burn. She said that many people stayed there all day, watching, crying, praying. There were no structures there then, so they didn’t have to worry about them falling, and there was no fire near there, so they knew that they were reasonably safe. She said that that night they camped out there, along with many people. Her mother wasn’t so worried about the house collapsing. She was worried that the fire would come to their part of the town. In the end it didn’t. Her house was spared. She was one of the lucky ones. -
